Beacon College Twice!!

Learning and Skills Beacon Logo Awarded Beacon College status twice, in 1999 and in 2003, by the UK Government.

John Leggott College is extremely proud of its status as one of the first ever Beacon Colleges announced by the UK Government. In 1999 it was named as one of the first ten Beacon Colleges in the UK. Baroness Blackstone stated "John Leggott Sixth Form College is particularly notable for the outstanding support it gives its students, and the way it raises their expectations to the highest possible levels. The college received eight top grades at inspection. Like other sixth form colleges, it has extremely high expectations of all and has a rigorous system of target setting."

Queen's Anniversary Prize

Queen's Anniversary Prize Logo Awarded The Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2002. The Award was made after rigorous evaluation of the work in Science at John Leggott College, and its contribution to the development of science education locally, nationally and internationally.

The Chairman of the Executive for the Award, Mr Robin Gill, said in a citation: "It is my great pleasure to advise you that Her Majesty the Queen has affirmed the award of the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education to your College. This Award follows the recommendation of the Awards Council to the Prime Minister, who advises the Queen."

Most of the award winners are leading universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge. Very few other colleges have been granted this award. It shows the excellent standard of Science teaching in the college.

The British Council Award for International Student Support

British Council Logo The Award recognises best practice in supporting international students from recruitment through to completion of qualifications. It will be granted to the college which has developed and maintained consistent and caring procedures in the support of international students studying in the UK.

Outstanding Performance

Chemistry at JLC In 2003 the college was again awarded ‘Beacon’ status in recognition of its top class inspection results and outstanding performance in their Learning and Skills Council assessment.

Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education Minister Margaret Hodge said at a Learning and Skills Beacon Award Ceremony in Westminster “John Leggott College has maintained excellent standards in science, teaching and learning, ICT, effective dissemination of good practice and encouraging students to aim higher and go on to higher education. This is a local college to be proud of and I look forward to many more following its lead.”

Association of Colleges' Logo Awarded The Association of Colleges Beacon Awards 2002 ‘The British Council Award for International Student Support’
The Award recognises best practice in supporting international students from recruitment through to completion of qualifications. It is granted to the college which has developed and maintained consistent and caring procedures in the support of international students studying in the UK.

It is the first time ever that a sixth form college has been given this award. Vice Principal, Robin Shawyer, who was in overall charge of international students at the college, said “All college staff are delighted to have the national recognition which this acknowledgement gives to the outstanding work which they do.” The college has also achieved the AoC Beacon award for its work with local schools in 2006.
