Why Choose Us

Why study at John Leggott College?

Studying at college is very different than studying at school. All students are here because they want to be, there is no uniform, and you do not have to stay on the site when you do not have lessons. We have over 40 A level & BTEC National subjects along with a wide range of GCSE, BTEC First and Foundation Programmes. The flexibility of our timetable enables us to offer virtually any combination of courses. In addition to your academic studies you will have the opportunity to expand your experiences by choosing one of our enrichment options. The college operates on an ethos of mutual respect where we will treat you as a mature young adult, with a minimum of rules provided you stick to the college's expectation that you will work and play hard. Our students achieve excellent results, due their commitment to their studies, both in lessons and during study periods both in college and at home.

High standard of Teaching & Learning

The teachers here at college specialise in working with 16-18 year olds and the quality of lessons is extremely high. We have won a number of awards including the Queen's Anniversary Prize and have won several Beacon Awards along with the Rolls Royce Finalist Prize For Science. Over 600 students go onto university every year with up to 20 gaining places at Oxford and Cambridge. Many of our students receive individual awards for top performance in their subjects. A number of staff have received prizes for their teaching.

Help and advice

Every student has a personal tutor who they will see at least twice a week. There is also a dedicated student support team who help with the more practical aspects of college life like bus passes, and the educational maintenance allowance. There is help with learning skills, organisation and specific help with additional learning needs. The college has a health officer, not only for if you are feeling unwell but also to offer confidential advice on all health issues that affect young people. There is also a college chaplain, a welfare officer & enrichment co-ordinator, these are all here to help you settle into college and support your both studies and your emotional well being.

Exceptional Careers and guidance

As the college specialises on 16 -18 year olds and has hundreds of students going off to university every year we have built up expert knowledge of applying to university and employment. We have developed special links with a number of universities which will give you special treatment and even bursaries during the university entry process.

High standards of Teaching and Learning facilities

The college has heavily invested in resources for students, with all the science labs recently refurbished, dedicated media studies areas, a CAD-CAM design & technology suite, specialist modern foreign language facilities along with PC access integrated into many classrooms. Each subject area has a specific suite of classrooms with staff based in departmental open access offices to help you during your study periods.

Superb public reputation

The college celebrated its 40th Anniversary last year. It is well know within the education sector and is regularly invited to participate in national pilots and work with the government's educational agencies on the latest developments in post 16 education. Students travel large distances to come to college rather than attend more local schools and colleges. This reputation is known by many university admission tutors and employers across the country.

Enrichment

Enrichment is the term we give to the wide range of activities outside your main academic studies. These vary from first aid courses, sports, choirs, orchestras (or rock bands), industrial visits, competitions, and business enterprise. See the enrichment section for a full list of activities.
