Science Summer School for Gifted and Talented Children

John Leggott College (JLC) has been organising highly successful Summer Schools for Gifted and Talented year six pupils for the past ten years. All primary and junior schools in North Lincolnshire are invited to nominate pupils in the top 5% of the year group who they feel would benefit from the programme. Demand for places is high and last year there were over 200 pupils recommended for the 84 places available.

The summer schools are non-residential and take place during the last two weeks in August. Pupils will have completed Y6 and be progressing to secondary education.

The summer school programme includes Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths [STEM subjects] and provides activities on Mathematics, Science and Information Technology.

The aims of the Summer school are to:-

  • engage and stretch pupils
  • develop thinking skills
  • develop mathematical skills
  • develop IT skills
  • develop social skills
  • raise pupils’ aspirations
  • aid transition
  • provide a stimulating and enjoyable experience in ways that are likely to have long lasting effects and will prove valuable to the continuing learning processes of the children concerned

Specialist tutors design and plan activities to engage and stretch whilst being fun and different from mainstream education. Aspects of the activities are within the school curriculum but the children will experience a topic at a higher level. In addition the activities support the development of literacy and numeracy.
