Entry requirements

Some qualifications at Level 2 (e.g. GCSE grades at C or above) will be advantageous. Universities will expect you to have GCSE Maths and English at grade 5 or above for primary education; a grade C in a Science subject will also be needed. It may be possible to sit a GCSE in Maths or English alongside the access course if you are deemed a suitable candidate.

Your qualifications and skills, as well as your interest and aptitude for the course, will all be discussed during an interview with John Leggott College course tutors. This will ensure the course is correct for you and you have the best chances of accessing and successfully completing a Higher Education course.

Where will it lead?

Following successful completion of this course you can expect to progress on to a University course, including:

•     English / Education (Secondary and FE)

•     History / Education (Secondary and FE)

•     BA Hons English followed by PGCE

•     BA Hons History followed by PGCE

•     BA Hons History in English followed by PGCE

How long will it take to qualify?

This will depend on the length of the course you take after JLC. Options are available at several HE establishments to fit in with other commitments. You could study full-time or part-time. The average FT degree will take 3 years plus a one year PGCE. PT equivalents can take up to 6 years to complete. Undertaking a Primary or Secondary Education degree can give you QTS in 3 years.


You will be assessed via a range of means including presentations, written essays and assignments, exams and a research project/dissertation.
