About the project

For the last 4 years John Leggott College has hosted fund raising events in aid of Nkoaranga primary and secondary schools in Tanzania and sent more than £4,000 to Africa. The money has been used to buy cement, windows, paint and labour so that new classrooms can be built and better facilities can be provided. Stationery equipment has also been sent over to the school.

This year 14 college students will be travelling to Tanzania in order to help rebuild a classroom. It will be their first opportunity to see how the money raised has been spent and to become more actively involved in the project.

Each student must raise £2,050 to cover flight and accommodation costs. In addition £5,000 is needed for building materials, books and resources (around £34,000 in total).

How John Leggott College became involved with the project

Nkoaranga is a large village in the foothills of Mt. Meru in Northern Tanzania. It has a state run primary school and a private secondary school (though not private as in the UK- state secondary education is in short supply so children who don't make the state school grades have to pay for education). It also has a hospital, an orphanage and innumerable churches.

The primary school has large class sizes of about 55-60 (though this is actually pretty reasonable by local standards). It has the basic buildings and desks but is otherwise lacking in teaching resources.

Former JLC student David Burtle spent his gap year doing a TEFL placement there in 2006.

“I worked in the primary school, and on the basis of pictures I sent home, the college became interested in developing a link with the schools. This started off with a drive for stationery due to a severe lack of writing materials at the school; I think it was called 'Pencils for Africa'. This carried on for a couple of years and since then college has been trying to organise a trip.”

Links have now been made via the church, and the Student Union have become one of the groups of ambassadors for the cause within John Leggott College.
