Governance - Dissemination of Good Practice
DISSEMINATION OF GOOD PRACTICE
The college has an outstanding reputation and has received national recognition with a range of awards and initiatives – in particular the Science Centre for Excellence. These pages are for others to share our projects and ideas that have made us a Beacon College.
The following reports are made available with the help of the Standards Funds.

Effective Management
Management was graded as a One under the heading of Management and Governance in 1995 and as a Grade One under Management in March 1998. The 1998 Inspection Report suggested there were no significant weaknesses and was accompanied by the FEFC Audit Service giving the College a favourable report with no recommendations of significance.
Good Governance
Governance was graded as a One under the heading of Management and Governance in 1995 and as a Grade One under Governance in March 1998. The 1998 Inspection Report stated that there were no significant weaknesses.
From the time of incorporation, the College has always had a full complement of Governors, with high attendance at all meetings of the Corporation and its Committees.
Science at JLC
John Leggott was one of a very few colleges to be awarded a grade One in Science by FEFC Inspectors. In May 1999 the College was given status as Science Centre of Excellence by the Yorkshire & Humber Government Office. Details of this are available elsewhere on this site.

A Catalogue of Interactive Science Materials
A catalogue of interactive materials available for Level 3 and Level 4.
Interactive Resources
Science tutors at John Leggott College have made significant contributions to the development and evaluation of a national, Post - 16 Science Resource Directory.
This directory was originally developed to support teaching and learning in the Vocational Certificate of Education (formally GNVQ) in science at advanced level but it includes many examples of resources suitable for AS and A level courses.
The science resource directory is hosted on the web site of the Institute of Physics and can be accessed at http://www.iop.org/Schools/vocalevel.
Individual science departments at John Leggott College have also developed resources for use in AS and A level courses. These can be found on the college web site at www.leggott.co.uk. A search facility leads to ILT materials on Biology, Chemistry, Electronics, Geology and Physics.
Widening Participation in a Sixth Form College & Student Target Setting
The DfEE expressed considerable interest in the way in which the College has used student target setting to improve student achievement and separately has linked to its associated primary schools to increase participation. While links with secondary schools are common for colleges, links with primary schools are not as common.
The first report is on Widening Participation in a Sixth Form College and on the college’s links with primary schools. The second report referrs to the significance of target setting in raising achievement.

DISSEMINATION OF GOOD PRACTICE 2001-2002
As part of the LSC project to disseminate good practice we have asked the heads of some of our more successful subjects to summarise the key factors which they
believe contribute to their success. We hope this may be of use to fellow practitioners working elsewhere. We offer our observations with no sense that we have the monopoly of wisdom and clear that we have much to learn from others.
