English in York

John Leggott College co-operates with ‘English in York’, a specialist English language school, to offer pre-course intensive English. The school teaches a general English programme which successfully prepares students from many countries who wish to boost their English Language skills before starting a course of full-time study in the UK. The students will need to pay an additional charge for this intensive tuition but it should ensure that they are well prepared from the start of lessons in September at John Leggott College.

Accommodation in York is with a host family arranged by the language school. The intensive English course can last for as many weeks as the student wishes and we will give advice about this. All the necessary arrangements will then be made by John Leggott College.

At the start of term, in late August, students move to Scunthorpe to start their full-time study at college. During their course they will receive all the English language teaching and support they need as part of the study programme provided by the College. English language lessons will lead to the IELTS test at the end of year one.

IELTS

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is accepted as satisfying a language requirement by the majority of universities and institutes of higher education in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It is also used by a number of professional bodies, including the British Ministry of Defence, the UK General Medical Council, the Medical Council of Ireland, the Australian Department of Immigration and the New Zealand Immigration Service. IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council and IDP Education Australia.
At John Leggott College international students can have lessons to prepare them for taking the IELTS exam. This will be recognised by all UK universities. Results are returned within two weeks. The score for each module, LISTENING, READING, WRITING and SPEAKING is given as well as an overall score. There is no pass or fail mark and the results are valid for TWO years.
Scores are on a scale from 1 to 9.
