  • John Leggott College is situated in the town of Scunthorpe which lies in the county of North Lincolnshire on the east coast of England.
  • Scunthorpe is only 2 ½ hours from London by train and there is also easy access to the major cities of Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, York, Lincoln and Hull.
  • The location of John Leggott College allows easy access to the beautiful scenery of rural Lincolnshire including small villages, miles of quiet country roads and an extensive network of footpaths.
  • North of Scunthorpe lies the Humber Bridge, one of the longest single span suspension bridges in the world.
  • Across the bridge lies the city of Hull which provides a major shopping and recreational centre.
  • A little further away (about an hour's drive) is the popular tourist centre of York with its ancient Minster, attractive streets and mediaeval city walls.
  • Closer to Scunthorpe there is the historic city of Lincoln with its magnificent cathedral and castle.

  • Our students have an excellent learning environment and all of the buildings have disabled access.
  • There is a library which is open throughout the day, and a careers library which contains all the UK university prospectuses.
  • There are extensive computing facilities available for student use, superb science laboratories and other specialist teaching areas, a performance arts studio for drama, music and dance, extensive sports fields, a cafeteria and a student common room with cyber café.
  • There are 1000 computers for student use, specially built multi-media Information Technology Centre and Social Science Centre.

How big is Scunthorpe? 

Only 70,000 people live in Scunthorpe making it a relatively small town. It is most famous for its steel works – one of the most modern, clean and efficient steel producing centres in Europe but has several parks and green areas within the town.

 

What is there to do in the town? 

In Scunthorpe there is a museum, theatre, leisure centre with swimming pool, bowling alleys, library, snooker hall, sports fields, golf courses and cinema.

 

Is it a safe town? 

Since it is fairly small, rural and friendly it is quite a safe town to live in and has a low cost of living.

 

Can I get foods from my home country? 

There are specialist food shops including those selling Chinese food and Halal meat in Scunthorpe. In addition you will find many international restaurants.

 

What shops and services does the town have? 

You will find banks, clothes shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, a law centre and multi-racial advice centre in the town centre.

 

Where can I go to pray? 

There are churches, mosques and temples in the town which reflect the different religions present in the population.

 

What is the weather like? 

Average temperatures are approximately 5°c in January and 25°c in July.

 

 

Living in Scunthorpe

The town of Scunthorpe has a population of around 70,000 and is an expanding centre of high-technology industries. It is well known for its steel works - one of the most modern, clean and efficient steel producing centres in Europe.
Scunthorpe is a thriving and friendly town. It can be busy but it avoids the congestion and bustle which are to be found in some larger towns and cities.
The town has a sizeable number of people who have moved from other countries. The churches, mosques and temples in the town reflect the different religions present in the population. Shops also provide a wide range of foods suitable for all. There are specialist food shops including those selling Chinese food and Halal meat.

The local Council operates a Multi-Racial Advice Centre and a Law Centre where multi-lingual staff are able to answer questions about both local and general UK matters.

Within the town there are large areas of open space including flower filled parks and gardens, unspoilt woodlands and several nature reserves.

There is a range of leisure facilities to suit all interests including a museum, leisure centre [with squash courts and leisure pool], Civic Theatre, bowling alleys, snooker halls, outdoor sports pitches and golf courses as well as a multi-screen cinema.
Scunthorpe is an attractive, varied and interesting area of the UK in which to live and study. Because the town is small it is relatively safe with a low cost of living.
