It is a case of welcoming back old friends as the JLC basketball team, the JLC Scunthorpe Wolves announce that their new headline sponsors for this year are three former students all with a passion for the game and supporting their college.
Within just a few short years of being formed in 2017 by maths teacher and former student of the college, James Brough, the JLC Scunthorpe Wolves basketball team have won the U16 division championship and have gone from strength to strength in terms of participation, community work and even reaching a National Semi-Final.
Following a far-reaching social media campaign in 2018 the team were able to grab the attention of one business that had deep connections to the college.
Snack Attack Cafe, a family-run business based on the Foxhills Industrial Estate run by brothers Jas and Sat Bhullar stepped up to support the Wolves in their search for a kit sponsor.
“Both me and Sat attended JLC and were interested in basketball at the time, so when we saw the opportunity to support what the college and the club were doing, it was a no brainer for us to give something back. As a family business, we want to be active in supporting our local community and young people in particular, the work we have also done in sponsoring other sports clubs within the area goes hand in hand with our support for the Wolves.”
Commented Jas Bhullar, who attended the college between 2006 – 2008.
Indeed, the brother’s devotion to supporting junior sport has led to them going well above and beyond their initial sponsorship agreement – as well attending games they have provided specially branded drinks bottles for the players and supplied nutritious food for the regular basketball camps and away journeys.
“This year we were given the opportunity to extend our sponsorship of the team, we didn’t hesitate. The team has been really successful over the last few years and the players have gone on to many different and exciting things after JLC. We are glad that we could be a part of their journey.”Continued, Sat Bhullar, who attended the college between 2008 – 2010.
The Wolves have welcomed an additional sponsor this year in milnerCreative, a Yorkshire based digital agency. Alan Milner, a JLC student from 2010-2012 heads up the company and as a young basketball player in Scunthorpe was actually coached by Brough and also represented JLC on the court during his time as a student. Alan has already been very active in supporting the club, conducting a photoshoot to showcase the new kit that features his company logo alongside the Snack Attack Cafe logo.
Alan commented: “When I think about my time at JLC, I remember how much I appreciated being able to play basketball. It helped me make friends, but also gave me transferable skills I still use today. Being able to support the next generation of students and basketball players through the milnerCreative sponsorship is the least I can do. I want them to benefit from everything we had at the time and more.”
The new kits, designed by “Triple Double Hoopwear” were modelled by some of the JLC players at a photoshoot recently as you can see in the banner of our News page.
“At John Leggott College we often talk about the “JLC Family” and these sponsorship deals are very much the embodiment of this. I would like to extend my thanks to Jas, Sat & Alan for their support of the JLC Scunthorpe Wolves. It is great to see our former students continue their association with the college long after they go out into the world and thrive.” Commented, Leon Riley, JLC Principal
For all prospective students who are interested in studying at John Leggott College they are hosting a virtual open day on Wednesday 18th November between 5pm and 8pm.
