An exciting new chapter in John Leggott’s history is just around the corner. The front of the college will be transformed through a three-storey extension.

Whilst the existing entrance will remain the same, part of A Block will be completely modernised. This will create “12 additional flexible use classrooms and associated breakout learning spaces” over three floors. Moreover the expansion and redesign of the college’s frontage will revolutionise the appearance of JLC, whilst also being practical with new rooms and break-out spaces being created. The work is estimated to begin in February 2022, with work expected to be completed by September 2022. This is positive as it means that prospective students at John Leggott will be able to experience the new development from an early stage of their college life.

Barrie Kirk, representing JLC’s Estates team, says the extension is due to the college’s identification of a “significant demographic increase in Y11 student numbers”, with the growth of Y12 learners at the college estimated to be “26% by 2024”. He also mentioned the building will specifically be “used to further develop the mathematics and health curricula”, aiding both students and staff.

Kirk additionally explained that the building will be environmentally friendly, stating it will “comply with the College’s Estates Strategy and national zero emissions targets and will include air source heat pumps, solar water heating and on-site energy generation.” As a student myself I find this reassuring, emblematic of the college’s wider ethos in regards to being environmentally conscious and sustainable for the future.

Leon Riley, Principal at John Leggott College, also says that “the expansion will allow the College to address the demographic upturn in Northern Lincolnshire and ensure we meet local demand. We continue to invest significantly into our estate to ensure our current and future learners have 21st century state-of-the-art learning spaces.”

This rare opportunity for development is an incredible and truly transformative moment in John Leggott College’s history. The impact of the transformation cannot be overstated, with the ground-breaking extension helping even more prospective and current students to fulfil their full potential at the college, whilst simultaneously benefitting staff and the environment alike.

The college was only one of a few colleges nationally to be selected as part of the growth post 16 expansion fund. It is a reflection on the college’s history of nurturing and developing the region’s academic talent.
