What a fast term this has been! With Christmas just around the corner, we thought we would take the opportunity to update you on a few things. There have been so many positives throughout this term that many students have been involved in:  Oxbridge interviews, the Christmas carol concert, quizzes and competitions, a whole host of trips and visits, sporting successes, and various guest speakers, to mention just a few. It has been wonderful to see our students getting involved with all the extended opportunities we offer, and it makes the college a very vibrant and inclusive place to be and to study.

It has been a fantastic and very productive term academically, with students working incredibly hard in their subjects and, as you may be aware, many have sat mock exams or assessments over the last few weeks; they will receive the results for these early in the new year, if they have not received them already.  You will be able to view these mock and assessment grades on our Cedar portal from 10am on Wednesday 12th January and we would encourage you to discuss them with your son or daughter, focusing on how to learn and improve from them – they are, essentially, assessments for practice and learning.

Linked to this, we would like to clarify these mocks will not be used for any ‘teacher-assessed grade’ (TAG) should we need to provide the exam board with such grades. If we do need to provide TAG grades, we will let all students and parents/carers know about this in advance, with full details of the assessments that will constitute the main evidence.

In respect of Covid, the information below is correct as of today. You will appreciate it is a rapidly changing situation and we will update promptly as needed, in line with DfE guidance.

Close Contacts and Testing
Close contacts of all Covid cases should take daily lateral flow tests for a week, meaning they can stay in the classroom if they are negative. You must take a lateral flow test every day for a week instead of self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who has Covid.

Close contacts will be expected to report the results online each day and can attend their education provider following a negative result. Results should be sent to the college using the form on the website https://www.leggott.ac.uk/covid-19/ and to the NHS using this link https://www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result

Those that test positive should self-isolate and order a confirmatory PCR test. A negative PCR result would override the initial lateral flow testing. Again report your results using the links above.

Return to college and Testing
As requested by the government, we are asking all staff and students to complete a lateral flow test the night before or the morning of returning to college after the holidays. Students will use the same links above to report their test results.

Exams
Any external exams scheduled for January, such as BTEC exams, will still go ahead. Further forward, there is no indication that the summer exams will be cancelled currently and, as a Covid adjustment to make up for any lost learning, the exam boards are due to publish main subject content details for summer exams on 7th February 2022. We will be gearing up a response to this after Christmas to maximise our use of the information, in terms of impact for learning, and preparation of students. If exams do not go ahead however, the college has to ensure there is adequate evidence in place to support a teacher-assessed grade (TAG). As a consequence, we are planning a series of mock exam-style assessments in the new year, some of which will be sat in formal exam conditions, just as external exams would be. As mentioned above, you will receive full details of these in advance.

Term start date
The first day back in college for students is Wednesday 5th January.

We would like to thank you all for your continued support and we appreciate greatly all the work you do at home in supporting your son/daughter with their college work and also in ensuring they maintain good study and rest habits. We hope you all have a wonderful break and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Regards,

Leon and the Senior Leadership Team
