7000 hours of work experience completed in 2017 – but more employers needed!
Students at John Leggott College have completed almost 7000 hours of work experience in 2017, thanks to the support of local employers in North Lincolnshire. The Work Experience team at the college are constantly inundated with requests from students to organise placements, so more employers are invited to come forward and take part in the programme!
This will be the fourth year of the Work Experience programme at John Leggott College – every year, organisations throughout the region offer its students valuable insight into their chosen field, enabling them to learn new skills, gain practical hands-on experience and receive expert mentoring.
In 2017, the college awarded Happy Stars Nursery in Scunthorpe an ‘Employer Engagement Award’ for welcoming 10 students to the team, and offering constant encouragement and support throughout the placement. Creative Support Ltd. in Scunthorpe was also presented with an ‘Employer Engagement Award’, thanks to the team’s incredible mentoring scheme and support for students. Student awards were presented to Jemma Weller, who has been incredibly proactive and hard-working, and Jess Deighton, whose confident, mature attitude on placement has secured her a full-time job with Creative Support!
Feedback from students taking part in work experience during their time at John Leggott College continues to be overwhelmingly positive, with several commenting that “it gives you the opportunity to try out an industry before you make that commitment to focusing your career plans on your future”.
More than 250 students have completed placements during this academic year, from working in hospitals and schools, to shadowing solicitors and journalists. The college expects to receive similar demand in the upcoming academic year, and particularly welcomes contact from local Media, Marketing, IT and Mental Health organisations that could offer work experience opportunities.
Work experience is beneficial for both the employer and the student; it is an opportunity to raise your business profile, work alongside up-and-coming professional talent, develop your employees’ skills and achieve new perspective and ideas. The Work Experience team at John Leggott College maintain strong links with employers during and after placements, providing advice and support, collating feedback and also inviting you to special events.
