College inspires young minds and “changes futures”
Year 5 pupils from Brumby Junior School in Scunthorpe enjoyed a unique insight into life at John Leggott College this week, with an opportunity to visit and try a range of subjects on offer to college students.
From moulding clay pots in Archaeology to testing Virtual Reality games in Media, the sessions were designed to inspire, motivate and engage with the younger generation, and help them to start thinking about their future careers. 130 pupils made the journey to John Leggott College, and quickly settled into the pace of college life. Sessions included trying out the dark room in Photography, donning a lab coat and becoming chemical detectives in Chemistry, and having a ‘smashing’ time making egg-breaking machines in Physics!
The pupils were also able to enjoy an exclusive tour of the entire campus with members of the college team, and find out more about the facilities on offer to students at the college. The morning was facilitated by Cheryl Ellams, Assistant SENCO at John Leggott College, who is passionate about developing links with primary schools in the area. The feedback from the morning was incredible, with teachers accompanying the students saying “the children were absolutely buzzing about their experiences! We all had an amazing morning…your staff were truly fabulous, friendly, approachable and knowledgeable!”
Paul Foster, Head teacher of Brumby Junior School, contacted John Leggott College following the successful morning:
“It is a credit to yourselves and our staff that you have worked so effectively to ignite the imaginations of pupils at exactly the right time in their lives. The number of pupils who I spoke to after lunch today who now want to go to JLC is huge! Thank you again – you may well have changed a number of futures today.”
For staff at John Leggott College, the opportunity to work with younger pupils was incredible. Their thirst for knowledge, enthusiasm and energy means that hopefully, in only a few years’ time, John Leggott College will be able to welcome the same children through the doors as full-time college students!
