College student secures position with prestigious Dentistry scheme

A John Leggott College student’s ambitions towards a career as a dentist have been set in motion, as she embarks on a highly-regarded scheme to prepare her for a degree in Clinical Dentistry.
Sophie Wilson, who attended Caistor Yarborough Academy before enrolling at John Leggott College, successfully gained a place on the University of Sheffield ADOPT (Access to Dental Occupations – Practice and Tutoring) scheme after being inspired by Dentistry at a careers event organised by John Leggott College.
Speaking about the careers event, Sophie said “I felt inspired by the presentation given by an enthusiastic and dedicated Dentist from my local area. She gave me an eye-opening insight into various careers available, and I then had a discussion with her which led to a fantastic work experience opportunity. She introduced me to the ADOPT scheme, which I researched and decided to apply to, knowing it would really contribute to my progression.”
The ADOPT scheme is a two-year programme for Year 12 students interested in a career in Dentistry. The scheme is aimed at student groups which are under-represented in higher education, such as being the first in their family to study at University or where personal circumstances make it more difficult to attend. Students see what it’s like to work in Dentistry, with the emphasis on hands-on activities and student interaction. They work with staff and students in the Dental School, and receive personal careers advice. Importantly, students who complete the programme are also guaranteed an interview for a course at the University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry.
The application process consisted of an online application form followed by a group interview at The University of Sheffield based on the topic of ethics. In preparation for this interview, Sophie worked closely with the Opportunities & Destinations team at John Leggott College – her mentor took Sophie through mock interviews and also encouraged discussions about her hobbies and studies. After attending the interview at the University, Sophie received an email confirming her place on the course, and is now ready to take the next step in following her dream career:
“Taking part in this programme is an ideal stepping stone to pursuing my career as a Dentist, and the opportunity will be invaluable in terms of developing my knowledge and experience. I know that the experience will also be extremely beneficial when applying to University, as it will enhance my personal statement greatly and show that I have already been interested and involved in working towards success in such a highly-competitive field. Overall, the programme will give me a brilliant insight into what studying and life at University entails and will significantly prepare me for the application process into dentistry.”
The Activities Programme which runs as part of the ADOPT scheme will enable Sophie to meet other like-minded students from around the country, and will encourage the development of essential skills such as team work, communication and interpersonal skills which are vital when working in a career which deals with members of the public on a daily basis. Sophie will be taking part in team-building days, A Level revision sessions, work experience placements and a summer school consisting of tooth anatomy, mock interviews and time in the dissection suite.
