What will I learn?

This is an indication of the units covered:

Year 1

Unit 1 Government Policies and the Public Services
Enables the learner to understand the different levels of UK government.

Unit 2 Leadership and Team work in the Public Services
Develops communication skills used in leadership and teamwork.

Unit 3 Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
Understanding the meanings and benefits of citizenship and diversity.

Unit 35 Land Navigation with map and compass
This involves understanding how to use map and compass to undertake a low level hill walk.

Unit 9 Outdoor & Adventurous Expeditions
This involves planning and undertaking two 2-day expeditions.

Year 2

Unit 4 Understanding Discipline in the Uniformed Public Services
Understanding the need for discipline, and learning about conformity, obedience and authority.

Unit 31 Exercise, Health & lifestyle
Assessing the health & wellbeing of an individual, providing advice on lifestyle improvement.

Unit 12 Crime & its Effect on Society
Looks at crime and disorder legislation, sentences and orders.

Unit 8 Understand the Impact of War, Conflict and Terrorism on Public Services
This unit looks at the effects of war, conflict and terrorism on the UK.

Unit 16 Career Planning for the Public services
The application and selection process when pursuing a career in the public services.

Unit 24 Current & Media Affairs in Public Services
Learning about the role of the media and how it is regulated.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English at grade 4 and a GCSE points average above 3.2.

How long will it take to qualify?

2 years

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a combination of practical activity (such as camping, presentations, and/or planning an event), group projects and written assignments.

Additional Learning Opportunities

Popular activities include First Aid, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Law Society, YMCA Fitness Instructor, sports teams and the opportunity to travel the world on exciting expeditions.

Who is this course aimed at?

  • Students with a keen interest in the public services
  • Students who wish to start a career in areas such as the RAF, Royal Navy, Army, Royal Marines, Police, Prison Service and/or Fire Service
  • Students that can apply themselves to the academic and practical areas of law, social sciences, politics and health & fitness

What next?

Following your BTEC Level 3 course, you could go directly into a career in the Armed Forces, Police, Fire Service or further training or move into Higher Education to study a wide variety of degree courses including Social Sciences, Criminology, Politics or Law.
