Creator Club lays ‘Foundation’ for Art Success
Three John Leggott College students are nearing the end of their time at the College after immersing themselves in every level of Art provision JLC offers.
Kieran Wilkinson, Jody Cross and Sarah Graham first met at Outwood Academy Foxhills in Scunthorpe. The trio grew closer whilst studying Art together at school. During Year 11 they were offered the opportunity to attend a pioneering series of Art related taster sessions at John Leggott College. This was first time that the College had offered this series of sessions, calling them The Creator Club.
Whilst taking part in the club, alongside students from numerous other local schools, they were able to try out all of the creative subjects at John Leggott College. This included experiencing photography, print making, book binding, graphic design and illustration.
The Creator Club had a profound impact on Jody, changing her mind completely about which subjects she would study after Year 11.
“I always liked Art at school, but I was considering studying Childcare at college. Creator Club was the best thing I ever did and completely made up my mind to study Art here.”
Sarah also had her mind made up by attending Creator Club.
“When I attended Creator Club it allowed me to experience what the teachers and facilities were like here and I realised this college suited me best.”
All three students chose to study A Level Fine Art alongside other subjects when they started at JLC. The other subjects included Graphics, Media and English Language. This was possible due to the flexibility given to students of JLC when choosing their subjects. It is possible to study any chosen combination of courses at the College.
Each of the students could have moved on to University level study straightaway following completion of their A Levels. However, they all chose to apply to stay at John Leggott College to complete a yearlong Art Foundation Diploma. The Foundation Diploma gives students the chance to spend a year exploring a range of artistic areas before deciding on a specialism.
The Foundation Diploma can also be an entry requirement for some Art related degree courses, such as the Graphic & Media Design course at the University of Arts, London that Jody is planning to progress to.
“I’m looking forward to going to University, but my time here at JLC has been brilliant. The staff have been extremely helpful and friendly, whilst also being a big inspiration.”
Kieran is also now planning to progress to University, choosing the Arts University Bournemouth to study Costume & Theatre Design.
“After Creator Club I knew JLC was the place for me. It has been great to study Art with Jody and Sarah right the way through since Year 7, especially at JLC.”
In contrast to her peers, Sarah is currently going through the interview process for Graphic Design apprenticeships.
“I’d really like to move on to an apprenticeship, getting loads of real world experience is important to me.”
Considering the progress that this artistic trio have made during their John Leggott College experience, it is clear that they will go on to become huge successes in their chosen fields.
