Farewell to International Class of 2017
John Leggott College hosted an International Student Leavers Ceremony on Wednesday evening.
The ceremony, held in The Core Conference centre at the College, saw over 100 people in attendance. John Leggott College welcomes International students from all over the world, including China, Russia and Vietnam. This ceremony celebrated the successes of the current cohort of International students before they leave the college, having completed their examinations.
Awards for all graduating students were presented and additional prizes were awarded to students that really excelled during their time at the College. Flora Shan and Duncan Dai were both presented with the ‘Special Contribution to JLC Award’. This was awarded to Flora for engaging with the JLC Student Leadership Team and making a real positive difference to college life for both International and Home students. Duncan received his award in recognition of his contribution to the College A*spire programme.
Ivy Ye was presented with the ‘Most Improved English Award’ by Maggie Williamson. This award gives recognition to the International Student that has improved their English the most during their time at JLC. Immersing the student in a British education and way of life has a massive positive impact on the English language skills of the student, in addition to giving them an amazing academic experience.
During the ceremony, two bands made up of International students performed. ‘Supernova’ performed two hits, one Chinese song and Kelly Clarkson’s hit ‘Because of You’. Acapella group ‘Medium-Well Done’ performed One Direction smash hit ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.
John Leggott College has a proud history of educating International students and inspiring them to follow their dreams. This history includes numerous students heading to prestigious Universities such as Oxbridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and other Russell Group Universities in the UK.
This success continues this year with International students accepting places at Universities including Oxford, University College London, London School of Economics and University of Warwick.
JLC Principal Leon Riley presented the International students with their awards and was full of praise and admiration about their achievements.
“The International students contribute a huge amount to the College community and deserve all of their success. We wish them the best of luck with their exciting next steps and hope they keep the College and Scunthorpe in their thoughts.”
Russian student Maks Lugovoy gave a speech during the ceremony which was both touching and comical in equal amounts.
