Former JLC student leading on innovative HIV research

Yet another John Leggott College alumni student is achieving career excellence, after a successful two years of study at the college resulted in top grades across all of his subjects.
Matthew Dickinson, who joined JLC from Baysgarth School in 2008, is now based at the University of Oxford where he is doing a PhD in HIV Immunology, whilst also working part-time as a Veterinary Surgeon.
After studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and French and taking a year to gain work experience, Matthew joined The University of Bristol to study Veterinary Science. He took an additional year out to enrol onto an intercalated degree in Virology and Immunology (human/medical), before graduating in 2015 and returning to Scunthorpe to work as a Vet at Ashby Road Veterinary Surgery.
Now back at the University of Oxford, Matthew is currently combining his PhD studies with part-time work as a vet at a local practice. He is keen to continue links with his former college and secondary school, to inspire new students to academic and career success.
“I feel that studying at John Leggott College set me up for my entire career to date. It fostered and increased my interest and knowledge base broadly across Science in general. I really did feel like a much more intelligent, well-rounded and happier version of myself after two years at the college. No other level of self-development from any other experience in my life has come close, per year invested, than my learning there.”
Chris Carr, Biology Teacher at the college said, “Matt was an excellent student during his time at John Leggott College. I remember him as having a quiet and unassuming nature that belied his ambition and enthusiasm for Biology. He set his sights on one of the most competitive subjects to study, and through his dedication and determination succeeded in securing a place at Bristol University. It is fantastic to see Matt doing so well, and he has very generously given up his own time to come back to JLC to talk to future aspiring Vets. I speak on behalf of all the staff that taught Matt when I wish him every success for the future!”
With so many John Leggott College students taking huge leaps in their careers as they complete their studies, the college is keen to strengthen relationships with our alumni all over the world.
