From local college to fourth best University in the world Ryan’s success!
After tracking former Huntcliff student Ryan Walker’s journey as he travelled from John Leggott College to The University of Cambridge to interview for a competitive Veterinary Medicine degree last week, we are delighted to announce that Ryan has been successful in receiving an offer to enrol at this prestigious institution!
Ryan, who currently studies A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Further Maths at John Leggott College, received bespoke support from his Progression Mentor Laura Warburton to complete his application and prepare for interview. This personal guidance and Ryan’s own motivation to succeed has paid off – he has now secured a conditional offer onto a degree in Veterinary Medicine.
Ryan said “When the letter arrived with my offer, I opened it in front of my parents and we couldn’t believe it! I was so shocked but really excited – I really wasn’t confident that I had been successful. It was great to tell my Grandparents, as they came to the interview with me and had supported me when I felt nervous.”
With his conditional offer being set at achieving two A* and two A grade A Levels (with one A* in Chemistry), Ryan now needs to focus his studies and motivation to achieve those top grades required to study at The University of Cambridge. He has already achieved A Level Maths at grade A, but he is prepared for the next few months of hard work and dedication to prepare him for this intensive degree in Veterinary Medicine. Luckily, he won’t have to work alone – Ryan has the full support of the teaching and support staff at John Leggott College to ensure he stays on track.
His Progression Mentor, Laura Warburton said “Ryan has been so motivated to achieve – he has completed a variety of work experience placements, and been very willing to act on feedback to improve his application and interview techniques. Now he has secured his offer, I will be working closely with Ryan to ensure he stays focussed, including offering support with finding University accommodation and applying for student finance.”
Speaking about why he applied to John Leggott College, Ryan said “I liked the friendly atmosphere when I came to an Open Evening. My parents encouraged me to apply because of the top results that the college achieves – results-wise, this was the perfect place to go.” He credits his tutors with giving him the confidence to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine, saying “Until you come to John Leggott College, you don’t know what you are capable of achieving – before I came here, I thought my goals were out of reach but studying here is helping me to fulfil my dreams.”
Ryan’s journey from secondary school to enrolling at John Leggott College, and now heading towards a fantastic career in Veterinary Medicine at the fourth-highest ranking University in the world, demonstrates how a passion for learning can pave the way to your goals. The University application process is something thousands of students around the UK undertake every year, but the bespoke support services in place at John Leggott College are designed to give our students the skills and confidence to succeed.
“It has definitely been the right choice for me to come to John Leggott College – the teachers really focus on the students and treat you like adults. College has helped to bridge the gap between school and University, developing my independence, and I’m really excited about the prospect of becoming a Vet and fulfilling my dreams.”
