International Students Win Leadership Team Election
John Leggott College students last week cast their votes to decide the new Co-Presidents of the Student Leadership Team. The votes were counted and the result announced yesterday afternoon.
The election saw Byron Law, Kocean Zheng and Sonja Dembo contest the election and all put forward a strong case as to why they should be elected to the role of SLT Co-President.
The Student Leadership Team at JLC work hard to make sure the needs of students are met across the college and regularly liaise with the Senior Management Team to discuss improvements that can be made.
JLC Principal Leon Riley is a strong advocate of the SLT and the role they play within college.
“The Student Leadership Team is a great way for our students to make a real positive difference to the college experience.”
Kocean campaigned with a promise to provide a better selection of activities for JLC students and opening up SLT meetings to all students with the hope of improving the links between the student body and the college leaders and managers.
Sonja’s campaign focussed on the need for SLT to become more transparent with students. She argued for an increase in interaction with the whole student body; taking on board the opinions of all students and offering solutions to issues and problems they face and offering explanations for the decisions that are made.
Finally Byron promised to tackle issues that students feel strongly about in college. This included attempting to increase awareness of the services available to students in college in addition to tackling numerous specific issues that he had identified.
Sonja Dembo and Kocean Zheng were successful in being elected as the next Co-Presidents of SLT. They will take the reins of SLT in September when they return to college for the start of their second year.
Sonja has been a member of SLT for the past year and was very pleased to have been elected as one of the Co-Presidents.
“I’m really satisfied with the result of the election and can’t wait to get started. We are meeting to formulate our strategy for the year and will be aiming to continue and expand upon the good work of the current SLT.”
Former Caistor Grammar School pupil Caitlin has been one of the Co-Presidents for the past year and offered her congratulations and advice to the incoming Co-Presidents.
“My time in SLT has been one of the most confidence-building things I have done. It has changed me as a person and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I would advise the incoming Co-Presidents to fully utilise the team around them and remember that you represent the student voice.”
Leon also congratulated the incoming Co-Presidents on their successful election campaigns.
“The students worked hard throughout the campaign period and I’d like to say a huge ‘congratulations’ to Sonja and Kocean.”
This result is the first time that two International students have been elected as the Co-Presidents of the SLT here at JLC. Kocean is really excited about the prospect of taking on the role in the next academic year.
“It will be amazing to be one of the main connections between staff and students at college. I can’t wait to be the voice of students.”
Acting as Co-Presidents will give Sonja and Kocean a great experience of leading a student body and give them a great opportunity to develop skills that will benefit them throughout their careers.
