About this course

This course is ideal for students who wish to study Physical Education (PE) in an academic setting. It equips students with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. The course is separated into 5 different components with 70% of the over grade being achieved from three exams taken at the end of the 2 year programme of study and 30% of the grade achieved from non-examined assessments (NEA). To support academic studies, our sport enrichment programme allows students a chance to train and compete for the college on a weekly basis, with opportunities to compete at a national level. This allows students to place into practice the theoretical principles learnt in the classroom. Additionally, PE and Sport students are provided opportunities to complete work experience both locally and internationally as part of the Turing Scheme.

Who is this aimed at?

This course is aimed at students who:

  • Wish to further study PE or sport science courses as well as other related subject areas such as psychology, biology and sociology.

What will you learn?

  • Component 1: Physiological factors affecting performance (30% of overall grade) Students gain a deeper understanding of key systems in the body and how they react to changes in diet and exercise. They also study the effects of force and motion on the body and how they can be used to our advantage.

  • Component 2: Psychological factors affecting performance (20% of overall grade) Students study the models and theories that affect learning and performance in physical activities, how different methods of training and feedback work and why their effectiveness differs from person to person. They also explore the psychological factors that affect group dynamics and the effects of leadership and stress.

  • Component 3: Socio-cultural factors affecting performance (20% of overall grade) This component focuses on the social and cultural factors that have shaped sports over time, and their influences on physical activity. Students consider the impact of hosting a global sporting event such as the Olympic Games, and the influence of modern technology on both the performer and the spectator of contemporary sport.

  • Component 5: Practical Performance (NEA, 15% of overall grade) For practical performance, students are required to demonstrate effective performance, the use of tactics or techniques and the ability to observe the rules and conventions within game situations.

  • Component 6: Evaluation and analysis of performance for improvement (NEA, 15% of overall grade) Within the EAPI, students will observe a live or recorded performance by a peer and provide an oral analysis and critical evaluation of their peer’s performance.
