Student fundraises to launch new college Chess Club
John Leggott College is celebrating the start of the new academic year with a brand new Chess Club, launched by student Tom Good. Formerly of Hayfield School in Doncaster, Tom is studying A Levels in Politics, Business Studies and Psychology, and in his spare time is a dedicated chess player! Keen to introduce the game to students at the college, Tom has recently sold some cricket equipment to raise £120, which he plans to spend on new chess sets for students to use.
Tom has been playing chess since the age of 12. His Dad introduced the game after successfully starting a Chess Club at the Primary School where he taught, and the duo continue to practise together on a daily basis. Since starting to study his A Levels, Tom is more interested in building strategies and techniques to enhance his chess skills, which he is hoping to pass onto interested students:
“I really want the new Chess Club to attract people of all abilities. Whether you already play or you’ve never even seen a chess board, everybody is welcome.”
In addition to learning to play the game alongside other students, Tom will teach a ‘move of the week’ and different techniques to build skill levels. The new Chess Club is just one of the clubs and societies on offer to students at John Leggott College, and students are also encouraged to set up their own societies. This coming year will see the launch of clubs in powerlifting, knitting, sign language, debating, make-up artistry and many more, as well as a range of team sports.
Jo Marwood, Engagement Officer at John Leggott College, said “we are really passionate about giving students a fantastic experience of life here at college. We are promoting a wide range of clubs and societies, as well as events and fundraisers on campus to help students settle in, make new friends and try something different. All ideas are welcome, and we’re also looking to speak with local businesses who may want to come and deliver talks or workshops to our students.”
