Safeguarding Concern
In order to ensure that safeguarding referrals are dealt with efficiently and effectively, we have a dedicated team of safeguarding officers who can pick up and respond to any concerns.

Keeping our students safe is our top priority
At John Leggott College, every student has the right to learn in an environment that is safe, supportive and free from harm. Safeguarding sits at the heart of everything we do - from the way we design our pastoral support to the training every member of staff receives before they set foot in a classroom. Our safeguarding approach at JLC covers child protection, abuse and neglect, bullying, harassment and discrimination, online safety, attendance concerns and site security.
What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding means protecting the health, wellbeing and human rights of children and young people, so they can grow up free from abuse, neglect and harm. Under the Children Act 2004, every organisation working with young people - including sixth form colleges like JLC - has a legal duty to help safeguard and promote their welfare. Children includes everyone under the age of 18.
For us, that means:

Providing a safe, welcoming learning environment for every student, whatever their background

Identifying students who are suffering, or at risk of suffering, significant harm

Taking swift, appropriate action to keep those students safe

Following clear, well-understood procedures that every member of staff is trained and expected to follow
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined for the purposes of this guidance as:

Protecting children from maltreatment

Preventing the impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development

Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care, and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
Prevent: protecting students from radicalisation
Prevent is part of the government's counter-terrorism strategy, and it's one strand of our wider safeguarding duty. As a college, we're required to help protect students from the risk of radicalisation and support anyone who may be vulnerable to extremist influence.
In practice, this means we:

Build students' resilience to extremist narratives through our curriculum and tutorial programme

Train staff to recognise early warning signs and respond appropriately

Work with local partners to support any student who may be at risk

Information
for Professionals
In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education, it is a requirement that schools and colleges share relevant safeguarding information or files with the education provision that student moves to. If schools or colleges are aware that their students are progressing onto JLC, please get in touch with the safeguarding team to arrange the transfer of files.
If you are working with a student who is involved in any social care meetings, looked after reviews or any other safeguarding meetings, please contact the college and we will arrange for a representative of the college to attend.
If any professionals wish to visit a student at the college, or arrange a meeting onsite with a student then please contact us via email so we can make the necessary arrangements.
If you have any safeguarding concerns or queries that you need to share with the college, please contact us and state whether the enquiry is urgent.
