Broader Horizons at Sheffield Hallam
Last week, students enjoyed an inspiring visit to Sheffield Hallam University for the Mathematics: Broader Horizons event. It was a valuable opportunity designed to nurture mathematical curiosity and support future academic ambitions. The day reflected the university’s strong commitment to student success, encouraging learners to explore how mathematics shapes our world and contributes to solving real global challenges.
From the moment students arrived on campus, they were immersed in an exciting programme that showcased the power and possibility of mathematics. They took part in interactive problem solving sessions, working through mathematical challenges that demonstrated how logical thinking, modelling and analytical skills play an important role in today’s most innovative industries. The visit also included a campus tour, giving students a real sense of university life and what it might mean to take the next step into higher education.
A key focus of the event was exploring the real world impact of mathematics. Students discovered how mathematical ideas drive breakthroughs in technology, engineering, science, finance and global sustainability. From data informed healthcare developments to smarter transport systems and climate modelling, mathematics is central to progress. The sessions helped students see mathematics not simply as a subject in the classroom but as a vital force that supports solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Our learners left with a clearer understanding of the pathways that a love of mathematics can lead to, including data science, engineering, computing, economics, scientific research and emerging careers that are continually evolving. By providing access to expert mathematicians and university environments, we are able to work together to support aspirations, build confidence and empower students to take ownership of their learning journey.
