English Language Requirements for International Students Studying in the UK
English Language Requirements for International Students
To study with us, all international applicants must meet the English language requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for the UK Student Visa.
UKVI normally requires students to demonstrate English proficiency at CEFR Level B1 or higher. This must be proven using a Secure English Language Test (SELT) that has been formally approved by UKVI.
Meeting this requirement is a mandatory part of the UK Student Visa application process.
UKVI Approved English Language Tests (SELTs)
We accept academic English language tests from all UKVI-approved SELT providers, including:
IELTS SELT Consortium
LanguageCert
Pearson PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home
Trinity College London (UK only)
PSI Skills for English UKVI (outside the UK)
These tests are officially recognised by UKVI for Student Visa purposes.
English Requirements for UK Student Visa Applicants
For students applying for a UK Student Visa, meeting the correct English requirement through a UKVI-approved SELT is essential.
UKVI requires applicants to demonstrate English ability at the appropriate CEFR level as part of the visa decision process, particularly for students entering further education or sixth form study.
UKVI Recognised English Qualifications
Some international students may already have completed English qualifications while studying in the UK. UKVI recognises certain qualifications as valid proof of English, including:
GCSE English
International GCSE English
A Level English
Scottish equivalents
These qualifications must have been completed in the UK and are assessed according to official UKVI guidance.
English Language Exemptions
A student may meet the UKVI English language requirement if they can provide evidence of one of the following:
A GCSE, International GCSE, A Level in English, or Scottish equivalent completed in the UK
An academic degree taught or researched in English and verified through UKVI-approved qualification checks
Evidence from a previous UK visa application where the required English level was already met
These are all official UKVI-recognised routes and can satisfy the English requirement for a Student Visa.
Students on Other Visa Types (Including Hong Kong BNO)
If a student is studying under a different visa category, such as the Hong Kong BNO route, we still require a valid UKVI-approved SELT for entry to our programmes.
This internal requirement ensures:
Consistent academic standards
Fair assessment for all international students
Better preparation for classroom learning
This applies even if English evidence is not required for immigration purposes and forms part of our college entry criteria.
Our College English Language Requirement
To meet our internal entry standard, students must achieve:
An overall UKVI-approved IELTS score of 5.0 or higher
At least 4.5 in every individual module
Equivalent scores from other UKVI-approved SELT providers are also accepted, provided the test meets official UKVI SELT criteria.
Why We Recommend IELTS for UKVI
Although we accept all UKVI-approved SELTs, we recommend IELTS for UKVI because:
It is widely available worldwide
It offers frequent test dates and global test centres
Many students are already familiar with the format
IELTS is one of the main SELTs recognised by UKVI both inside and outside the UK.
If You Are Unsure Which English Test You Need
If you are unsure which SELT to book or whether your existing qualification is acceptable, our International Office can provide personalised guidance.
For official guidance, families can also refer to GOV.UK guidance on proving English language ability through a SELT.
