UK Student Visa Information for International Students

How to apply for a Student Visa

Applying for a UK Student Visa can feel complex, especially if you are studying abroad for the first time. Below are some key pieces of information international students applying to John Leggott Sixth College will need to know.

If you are ever unsure about any part of the visa process, our experienced International Team is always here to guide and support you.

Can I work while studying at John Leggott College?

No. International students studying at further education level (RQF Level 3) are not permitted to work in the UK. This includes part-time, weekend, and holiday work.

Your visa conditions will clearly state that employment is not allowed, and it is essential that you follow these conditions throughout your studies to remain compliant with UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) rules.

Can my parents or family members come with me?

Family members cannot apply as dependants for further-education students. UKVI only allows dependants for specific higher-education or government-sponsored routes.

However, parents or family members may visit you temporarily under the correct visitor visa rules, for example when you first arrive in the UK. These visits must be short-term and do not permit long-term stays.

Do I need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)?

Yes. All international students must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of their Student Visa application.

Paying the IHS allows you to access the National Health Service (NHS) during your time in the UK, including GP appointments and hospital treatment where required.

When should I travel to the UK?

You should plan to arrive shortly before your course start date, within the travel window permitted by your visa.

  • Do not arrive too early or too late

  • We will confirm the recommended arrival dates and induction schedule

  • You must inform the College at least 10 days before arrival so transport and arrival arrangements can be organised

Students under 18 should also carry accommodation details, as Border Force officers may request this on entry.

What happens if my visa application is refused?

If your visa application is refused, contact us immediately.

Our International Team will:

  • Review the refusal letter with you

  • Explain the reasons for refusal

  • Advise on the most appropriate next steps

Many refusals are caused by financial evidence errors or missing documents, which is why careful preparation and document checking are essential before submitting your application.
