Screening & Study Day

Screening & Study Day

On Tuesday, all A Level Film students took part in an inspiring Screening and Study Day at Beverley Parkway Cinema to support their examination work on Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed film Pan's Labyrinth. The event offered a valuable opportunity to strengthen students' understanding of the film and develop the analytical skills needed for high level Film Studies success.

As well as watching the film on the big screen, students participated in specialist masterclasses led by the University of Hull's Film department. These sessions helped students explore film themes, genre, cinematography and narrative structure, allowing them to deepen their critical knowledge and apply more advanced interpretation to their exam responses.

A highlight of the day was a guest talk by Ian Nathan, an internationally renowned film writer and critic, former editor of Empire Magazine and a leading authority on fantasy cinema. Ian shared his expertise on filmmaking, the evolution of the fantasy genre and the creative vision behind Pan's Labyrinth. Students were captivated by his insight and gained a richer understanding of the film’s cultural significance and artistic impact.

Throughout the day, students also had the chance to receive individual careers advice on journalism, publishing and wider creative industry pathways. This guidance supported learners who are considering future careers in film production, screenwriting, media criticism and other related creative fields.

The Screening and Study Day was an overwhelmingly positive experience. Students returned with a higher level of subject knowledge, enhanced essay writing confidence and valuable inspiration for their examination preparation. The depth of learning they gained will provide an important advantage as they refine their analysis and develop sophisticated responses for their final assessments.
