Leggott Launch: Your Guide

Leggott Launch: Your Guide

Leggott Launch Is This Thursday. Here's What to Expect.

This Thursday, 25 June 2026, John Leggott College opens its doors for Leggott Launch, a transition day designed specifically for students joining JLC in September.

Whether you're coming from a local school in Scunthorpe or travelling in from across North Lincolnshire, this day is your first real look at the college that will shape the next two years of your education.

What is Leggott Launch and why does it matter?

Ahead of Leggott Launch is JLC's dedicated transition day for new students, giving you the chance to visit the campus, meet staff, connect with future classmates, and get a real feel for college life before September arrives.

Starting sixth form is a genuine shift - more independence, more subject focus, and a different daily routine than school. Research from Student Minds, the UK's leading student mental health charity, consistently shows that students who feel connected to their institution before they start settle more quickly and perform better academically [Cite: Student Minds -studentminds.org.uk].

Ahead of Leggott Launch is built with exactly that in mind.

What does the JLC campus look like and how will I find my way around?

John Leggott College, Scunthorpe is a multi-building campus, and knowing the layout before Thursday makes the day significantly easier.

Reception is on the ground floor, so head there when you arrive. The entrance also houses Student Services and along the main corrider, Exams, Learning Support.

Teaching is spread across named blocks, each with a clear subject focus:

A Block covers English and Languages on the ground floor, Business and Law on the second floor, and Maths and Accounting on the third floor. Within A Block, The Arc is also worth finding early. Upstairs you will find Careers, Progression and Enrichment and downstairs Wellbeing Support. The UCAS application process for 2027 university entry opens in the autumn term, so getting familiar with the Careers team now puts you ahead [Cite: UCAS How It Works - ucas.com].

B Block is the science and creative hub. Ground floor is Biology, the first floor covers Applied Science, Creative Arts, 3D Design and Textiles, and Fine Art, the second floor is Physics and Engineering alongside Photography and Graphics, the third floor is Chemistry, and the fourth floor houses T-Level Health and Social Care and Childcare.

C Block is home to the International team.

D Block contains the IT Portal and Services on the ground floor, Sports and Uniformed Protective Services on the first floor, and The Hub, which is where you will find your Progress Tutor and Pastoral Support throughout your time at JLC.

E Block covers Social Sciences and Humanities.

H Block is where you will find Media, Computing, Gaming, Drama and Music.

The Margaret Mason Centre is a dedicated social space.

Outside, the campus includes a 3G pitch, Multi Use Games Area, West Common Sports Hall, Dance Studio, and The Quad. These are not just spaces to walk past -they become part of daily college life.

What enrichment activities can I try on Thursday?

Alongside your campus tour and taster sessions, Thursday is also a chance to explore the full range of enrichment JLC has to offer, and there is a lot going on.

The Enrichment Launch runs throughout the day with workshops and sessions across campus. If you fancy getting active, there is five-a-side football, Pilates in the Dance Studio, defence classes in the Gym, and table tennis outside in the Quad. For something more creative or social, you can drop into Sign Language, Writers and JLC Talks, the Debate Society, Social Media Ambassadors, Dungeons and Dragons, Pi Club, Law Society, a Gaming Tournament, or Future STEM Professionals. The Wellbeing Chill Out Zone in the Lower Arc is also open if you just want to take a breath and settle in at your own pace.

Sessions run at specific times throughout the day, so pick up a timetable when you arrive and plan ahead to avoid missing anything you want to try. Enrichment at JLC is part of what makes college life different from school, and Thursday gives you a genuine taste of it before September.

What support is available on the day?

You won't need to hunt for help on Thursday. Members of the Wellbeing team, Progress Tutors, and Student Services staff covering bursary and transport information will all be out and about across campus throughout the day, so you can speak to the right person whenever you need to.

If you have specific additional support needs, Thursday is a natural opportunity to introduce yourself to the Learning Support team. Keep an eye out for them on the day.

If you haven't already uploaded your photo to Cedar, JLC's student portal, there will be an opportunity to have it taken on Thursday. It's worth getting this sorted early so your student record is complete before September.

What should I do to prepare before Thursday?

The most useful thing you can do before Leggott Launch is confirm your subject choices if you haven't already, and bring any questions you have about your timetable, transport, or support needs.

Students travelling to JLC from across North Lincolnshire and the Humber region, including those coming in from Brigg, Barnetby, and beyond, can find details about dedicated college transport routes and student travel passes on the JLC Transport page.

If you're eligible for financial support, the 16-19 Bursary Fund may cover costs including travel, equipment, and course materials. Applications for the 2026-27 academic year are worth exploring now rather than waiting until September [Cite: 16-19 Bursary Fund — gov.uk]. Applications are now open and you can apply here - Financial Support.

Bring something to write with. You will leave Thursday with more information than you expect, and having a way to note down names, room numbers, and next steps will help it stick.

What happens after Ahead of Leggott Launch?

Thursday is the beginning of your JLC journey, not a one-day checklist.

After the transition day, the next steps are enrolment in August and your official start in September. You can also explore the full course offer and confirm subject selections via JLC Course Search.

For students still weighing up whether JLC is the right choice, the National Careers Service offers independent guidance on post-16 options across North Lincolnshire and the wider Humber region [Cite: National Careers Service Post-16 Options - nationalcareers.service.gov.uk].
