Comic Book Artist
We were delighted to welcome Robert Deas, a full-time comic book artist and illustrator, to our sixth form college this week for an inspiring and interactive creative careers workshop.
Robert, whose work is published weekly, led students through a hands-on guided drawing workshop, giving them a real insight into the techniques and discipline required to succeed in the competitive world of illustration and comic art. The session gave students the opportunity to develop practical skills while exploring the realities of creative careers.
During the talk, Robert shared his personal journey from his school days in Grimsby, through further education- including completing a Foundation course in art and design - to building a successful career in the comic book industry. He spoke honestly about the challenges he faced and the determination it took to establish himself as a professional freelance artist before securing a permanent role in the industry.
A key theme of Robert’s visit was the importance of maximising opportunities. Students learned about the value of entering competitions, gaining work experience, creating published pieces, and consistently building a strong portfolio. His advice offered invaluable guidance for students considering careers in art, illustration, graphic design, and creative media.
Robert’s message to students was simple, memorable, and motivating:
“Never give up on your dream.”
