First Week at JLH Immingham

New students settle in at John Leggott Humber in Immingham

New students have finished their first week at John Leggott Humber, a college in Immingham that gives young people a fresh start with their GCSE English and maths. The week was about helping the new cohort settle in, make friends and feel confident around the site.

John Leggott Humber is a one-year Fresh Start Programme in Immingham, based at Oasis Academy Immingham, for young people leaving Year 11 who did not achieve grade 4 or above in GCSE English and maths. It is run by John Leggott College in partnership with Oasis Academy Immingham and HETA, the region's leading engineering training provider. How did new JLH students spend their first week?

New students at JLH spent their first week in Immingham taking part in team-building games, icebreakers and a scavenger hunt around the site.

The icebreaker activities gave the 11 students a chance to get to know each other and start forming new friendships. JLH works with small class sizes, so these early friendships help every student feel part of the group from the start.

Why did the week include a scavenger hunt?

The scavenger hunt helped JLH students learn their way around the Immingham site in a fun, hands-on way.

Students explored key areas of the site together. Knowing where everything is means they can focus on their learning, not on finding their next room.

Staff were delighted to see so much enthusiasm and engagement from the group during the week.

What happens next for the new cohort?

In the 2026/27 academic year, the new cohort will study GCSE English, GCSE maths and three Level 2 qualifications at JLH. Level 2 is the same level as GCSEs at grades 4 to 9. [Cite: National Careers Service, qualification levels explained, nationalcareers.service.gov.uk]

Alongside their GCSEs, students take Level 2 Applied Science, Level 2 Work Skills and Level 2 Creative IT. The work skills and creative IT courses were developed with employer input.

Each week follows the same pattern:

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: lessons at the Immingham site

  • Wednesday: John Leggott College in Scunthorpe, with a free bus

  • Friday: work experience, volunteering or a part-time job

At the end of the year, students can progress to an apprenticeship, a Level 3 programme (including Engineering, supported by HETA) or employment. [Cite: HETA engineering training, heta.co.uk]

Hannah Thorpe, Head of Centre at John Leggott Humber, said: "Our aim is to help every student build confidence, develop practical skills, and take the next step towards an apprenticeship or Level 3 programme."
