JLH Fresh Start Programme Induction

New Fresh Start Programme Students Settle In at Immingham Induction

Before the first resit lesson or the first work placement, every new student on the Fresh Start Programme in Immingham started in the same place: induction. In their first few days at John Leggott Humber, learners took part in an induction programme designed to help them make a positive start to the 2026/27 academic year.

For many students, this was their first week since leaving Year 11. Induction gave them time to learn how the year works before lessons began in earnest.

John Leggott Humber is a one-year Fresh Start Programme based at Oasis Academy Immingham. It is for young people leaving Year 11 who did not achieve grade 4 or above in GCSE English and maths. What did students cover during induction at JLH?

Induction at JLH in Immingham covered the rules and expectations of the programme, how the course is structured, and the daily routines students will follow all year.

Students learned the standards expected of them, both on site and in the workplace. They were also introduced to the programme's workflows, so they know how their week runs and where to go for each part of it.

For a new student, that means fewer surprises. You know what is expected of you from day one.

Why does JLH cover workplace standards in the first week?

JLH introduces workplace standards early because work experience is a core part of the Fresh Start Programme, not an add-on.

Every student on the programme has a guaranteed work experience placement. Knowing what employers expect, such as punctuality, behaviour and how to present yourself, helps students get the most out of that time.

What does a typical week look like for JLH students?

A JLH week combines three days of lessons in Immingham, one day at John Leggott College in Scunthorpe, and one day kept free for work.

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: Lessons at the Immingham site, in small classes with personalised learning plans and mentoring.

  • Wednesday: A free bus to JLC in Scunthorpe for specialist science facilities and Upskill, JLC's enrichment programme.

  • Friday: Free for work experience, volunteering or a part-time job.

Across the year, students work towards GCSE English, GCSE Mathematics, and Level 2 qualifications in Applied Science, Work Skills and Creative IT. Level 2 is the same level as GCSEs at grades 9 to 4. (Source: What qualification levels mean, GOV.UK)

What happens now induction is over?

With induction complete, JLH students have moved into their full timetable and are working towards their qualifications for the year ahead.

Hannah Thorpe, Head of Centre at John Leggott Humber, said: "Our aim is to help every student build confidence, develop practical skills, and take the next step towards an apprenticeship or Level 3 programme."

That next step could be an apprenticeship, where you train with an employer while earning a wage, a Level 3 programme such as Engineering supported by HETA, or employment. (Source: Apprenticeships, GOV.UK)

If you are in Year 11, or you support a young person who is, you can find out how the year works on the Fresh Start Programme at John Leggott Humber page, and keep an eye on upcoming JLC dates and events for the next chance to visit.
