International Exam Support for Sixth Form Students in the UK
As we welcome students back to college after the Easter break, we are pleased to share an update on how this time was used productively and how we are now moving confidently into one of the most important periods of the academic year.
For international students studying A Levels in the UK, the summer exam season is a significant milestone. It marks the culmination of two years of study and, for many, the final step before progressing to university. At a sixth form college like John Leggott College, our priority is to ensure that international students feel academically prepared, well supported and confident as they approach their final assessments.
Preparing International Students for A Level Exams
The summer exam period is particularly crucial for Year 2 students, who are completing their final A Level examinations and preparing to move on to the next stage of their academic journey. Many of our international students are balancing exam preparation with wider considerations, such as adapting to the UK education system, studying in a second language and planning future university pathways.
Understanding these pressures, we place a strong emphasis on clear academic guidance, structured support and reassurance throughout the exam period. Our aim is not only to help students achieve strong results, but also to ensure they feel supported and confident during what can be a demanding time.
Using the Easter Break Productively
During the Easter break, many international students chose to remain engaged with their studies by attending Easter Revision Sessions, delivered by our teaching staff throughout the holiday period. These sessions provided valuable additional academic support at a key point in the year, allowing students to consolidate their learning and focus on exam preparation without the pressures of a full timetable.
Teachers generously gave up their own holiday time to come into college and support students. This commitment reflects the strong culture of care and academic ambition within the college and our shared goal of helping students achieve the best possible outcomes.
Focused Academic Support Across Key Subjects
Revision sessions were structured and delivered across a wide range of A Level subjects, including Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Economics and several others. Each session was designed to help students revisit core content, strengthen subject knowledge and become more confident with exam‑style questions.
Students benefited from the opportunity to ask subject‑specific questions, receive personalised feedback and practise exam techniques in a supportive environment. For international students, this type of focused revision is particularly valuable, as it helps reinforce subject‑specific vocabulary and develop familiarity with UK assessment styles.
Ongoing Support After the Easter Break
Academic support continues now that students have returned to college. Our Progress Tutors are delivering weekly additional exam support sessions through a structured programme designed to help students prepare effectively for their upcoming exams.
These sessions focus on developing strong exam techniques, managing time effectively, planning revision in a realistic and organised way, and identifying areas where further improvement is needed. Just as importantly, they also help students build confidence and resilience as they move closer to their exams.
This consistent and guided approach is especially important for international students, who may be managing academic pressure alongside cultural adjustment and time away from home.
Balancing Academic Success and Student Wellbeing
While academic preparation is essential, we also recognise the importance of balance and wellbeing, particularly during exam season. Supporting students’ mental and emotional wellbeing is a key part of our international student support approach.
To provide students with the opportunity to relax and recharge, the International Department organised two Easter trips, allowing students to enjoy some well‑earned downtime alongside their studies. These experiences play an important role in helping students manage stress, build friendships and feel part of a wider college community.
Experiencing Life in the UK Beyond the Classroom
One of the trips took students to Meadowhall, one of the largest shopping and leisure destinations in the UK, located near Sheffield. The visit gave students the chance to explore UK retail culture, enjoy food from around the world and spend time with friends in a relaxed setting.
This trip was particularly popular, as many students were keen to shop for outfits for their upcoming Graduation ceremony. Returning to Meadowhall by popular demand reflected how much students value these opportunities to enjoy everyday life in the UK alongside their studies.
Creating Shared Memories at Alton Towers
Students also enjoyed a visit to Alton Towers, the UK’s most famous theme park. After weeks of focused revision, the trip offered a chance to spend time outdoors, enjoy the rides and attractions and create lasting memories together.
For international students, experiences like this help strengthen friendships, build confidence and create a sense of belonging. These shared moments are an important part of the wider international student experience and contribute positively to wellbeing during busy academic periods.
A Safe and Supportive UK Study Environment
Both trips were extremely well received and played an important role in supporting students’ wellbeing and sense of community. They also reflect the wider benefits of studying at a UK sixth form college located in a safe area with strong transport links to major UK cities.
International students at a college like John Leggott College benefit from a supportive environment, experienced pastoral teams, and a strong focus on safeguarding. This helps families feel reassured that students are safe, supported and well cared for while studying in the UK.
Looking Ahead to the Final Term
As we move through the final term, our focus remains firmly on strong academic outcomes, targeted exam support and continued student engagement. We are proud of the commitment shown by both staff and students during this important period and look forward to supporting our international learners as they complete their A Levels and progress to university.
Working in Partnership with Agents and Families
We would like to thank our international education agents for their continued support and partnership. We encourage agents to share this update with parents and prospective students to highlight the level of care, commitment and additional academic and pastoral support available to international students during key academic periods.
