Enrichment Wednesdays for JLH Students
Wednesdays at John Leggott College Give JLH Students Room to Try Something New
Every Wednesday, the bus leaves Immingham for Scunthorpe. On board are students from John Leggott Humber, heading to John Leggott College for a day that looks quite different from the rest of their week.
Part of that day is set aside for enrichment. In the 2026/27 academic year, JLH students can choose from a wide range of self-led and group activities at JLC, giving them space to develop new skills, explore their interests and meet students from across the college.
Why do JLH students spend Wednesdays in Scunthorpe?
JLH students travel to John Leggott College in Scunthorpe every Wednesday on a free bus, to use specialist science facilities and take part in enrichment.
The rest of the week follows a different rhythm. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are lesson days at the Immingham site, and Friday is kept free for work experience, volunteering or a part-time job. Wednesday is the day students get to be part of a much bigger college community.
What enrichment can JLH students choose from?
JLH students can join JLC's enrichment programme, which includes a mix of self-led and group activities such as Sport and Media.
Alongside these, Wednesday sessions for JLH students can include employer-linked learning, progression briefs, work-based experiences and bespoke workshops, such as the Aerospace Engineering workshop. You can see the full range of activities on the Enrichment page.
What is the difference between self-led and group enrichment?
Self-led enrichment lets you follow a personal interest at your own pace, while group enrichment brings you together with other students to work on something as a team.
Both have value. Self-led activities help you build independence and take charge of your own progress. Group activities help you practise communication and teamwork, often with students you haven't met before. Many students find they enjoy a mix of the two.
How does enrichment help with apprenticeships and jobs?
Enrichment helps JLH students strengthen the employability skills that employers look for, such as confidence, teamwork and working with new people.
That matters because the year at JLH leads to a clear next step: an apprenticeship, where you train with an employer while earning a wage, a Level 3 course, or employment. (Source: Apprenticeships, GOV.UK) Level 3 is the same level as A levels, and is the next stage on from the Level 2 qualifications students work towards at JLH. (Source: What qualification levels mean, GOV.UK)
When you sit down at an interview, being able to talk about something you've tried, enjoyed or got better at gives you real examples to draw on. Enrichment gives you those examples.
What else can JLH students do while they're at JLC?
On Wednesdays, JLH students can use all of John Leggott College's facilities and social spaces, and book appointments with the JLC Careers Team, Work Opportunities Officer and Wellbeing Team.
That makes Wednesday a useful day for planning ahead. You might spend the afternoon in an enrichment session, then use a free moment to ask the Careers and Employability team about apprenticeships or placements.
Ready to see what's on offer?
Have a look through the Enrichment options and think about which you'd try first: something that builds on what you already enjoy, or something completely new. If you're in Year 11 and want to know how Wednesdays fit into the rest of the year, the Fresh Start Programme at John Leggott Humber page sets out the full week.
