JLH Students Meet Employers at Jobs Expo Plus in Scunthorpe

On Wednesday 30 September 2026, a busy Baths Hall in Scunthorpe welcomed students from John Leggott Humber to Jobs Expo Plus. For young people in Immingham looking ahead to apprenticeships, jobs and work experience for 16 year olds in the Humber, it was a chance to meet professionals from a wide range of industries in one room.

What is Jobs Expo Plus?

Jobs Expo Plus is a free event run by North Lincolnshire Council that brings employers, training providers and support organisations together at The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe.

This year's expo ran from 10am to 4pm and was open to everyone, including young people taking their first steps into work. Organisations attending included British Steel, 2 Sisters Food Group, Stagecoach East Midlands, Anglian Water, the Royal Air Force and Ongo.

The council described it as more than a jobs fair, saying "one conversation could change your life". With more than 5,000 jobs advertised in North Lincolnshire in just three months, there is plenty to talk about.

What did JLH students do at the expo?

JLH students spent the visit speaking with professionals from a wide range of industries and practising networking in a professional setting.

The expo fell on a Wednesday, the day JLH students are already at John Leggott College in Scunthorpe each week. It gave them the chance to step out of the classroom and talk to employers face to face, including organisations such as British Steel, one of JLH's industry partners.

What did students ask the employers?

JLH students asked about career pathways, apprenticeships and future job opportunities, and came away with advice to help with their next steps.

Some conversations focused on how people get started in an industry. Others looked further ahead at where different careers can lead. Either way, students gained a broader understanding of the world of work and the range of options open to them.

Why does talking to employers matter at 16?

Speaking with employers builds the confidence young people need for interviews, placements and their first job.

Walking up to a stand and starting a conversation can feel daunting. Doing it at an expo, surrounded by classmates, is a good way to practise. You don't need to have all the answers. Just asking good questions helps you work out what employers are looking for and which careers might suit you.

How does the expo fit into the rest of the JLH year?

The Jobs Expo is one part of a year at JLH that is built around preparing students for an apprenticeship, a Level 3 course or employment.

Every JLH student has a guaranteed work experience placement, and Fridays are kept free for work experience, volunteering or a part-time job. Students can also book time with the JLC Careers Team and Work Opportunities Officer to follow up on ideas from events like this one. You can read more about how the year works on the Fresh Start Programme at John Leggott Humber page.

If an expo conversation has got you thinking about an apprenticeship, a job where you train and earn a wage while gaining a qualification, you can browse current vacancies on Find an Apprenticeship.

Where can you take those conversations next?

Bring your questions from the expo to the Careers and Employability team on your next Wednesday at JLC. They can help you turn a good conversation with an employer into a plan.
