John Leggott College Joins the National Defibrillator Network
At John Leggott College, the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider community has always been a priority. We are proud to share that the college defibrillator is now officially registered on The Circuit, the national defibrillator network, and is connected to East Midlands Ambulance Service.
This means that in the event of a cardiac emergency on or near the campus, emergency services can locate our defibrillator instantly and direct someone to it while help is on the way.
What Is The Circuit?
The Circuit is the national defibrillator network managed by the British Heart Foundation. It provides NHS ambulance services with vital information about defibrillators across the UK so that in those crucial moments after a cardiac arrest, they can be accessed quickly to help save lives.
There are more than 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK every year, and fewer than one in ten people survive one. Less than 10% of these cases see a defibrillator being used. One of the reasons for this is that many defibrillators exist in communities but are not registered, meaning emergency services have no way of knowing where they are.
By registering on The Circuit, organisations like John Leggott College make their defibrillator visible to ambulance call handlers the moment a 999 call is made nearby.
Why This Matters for Our Community
A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time, and every second counts. For every minute without CPR and defibrillation, a person's chances of survival decrease by around 10%. Having a registered, maintained defibrillator on site means that if the worst were to happen on or near the college campus, help could be directed to the right place without delay.
The JLC defibrillator is located at West Common Lane, Scunthorpe, DN17 1DS, and is now part of a national network that gives it the best possible chance of being used when it matters most.
Keeping the Defibrillator Ready
The college has also nominated a Support Guardian, a designated person responsible for looking after the defibrillator and ensuring checks are carried out and recorded on time. This keeps the device in the best possible condition and ensures the information held by ambulance services is always accurate and up to date.
A Commitment to Community Safety
Joining The Circuit is part of a broader commitment at John Leggott College to play an active and responsible role in the local community. The college campus is a busy place, welcoming students, staff, visitors and local partners throughout the year. Having a connected, maintained defibrillator on site reflects the college's values and its responsibility not just to those within the building, but to the wider Scunthorpe community.
Students at JLC benefit from an environment that places great importance on wellbeing, and this initiative is a practical extension of that. It also provides a meaningful talking point for health and science students about the importance of community health infrastructure and emergency preparedness.
