Back on Campus: Kevin Doyle

There are few things more valuable in a student's college experience than hearing directly from someone who has walked the same path. This week, John Leggott College was delighted to welcome back one of its own as JLC alumni and professional actor Kevin Doyle returned to the Scunthorpe campus for a visit that students are unlikely to forget.

Kevin, who has gone on to build a successful career as a professional actor, came back to college with two purposes. He joined us to record a podcast he is currently involved in, and he also gave up a significant portion of his day to work directly with our drama students in a hands-on, professional workshop setting. The result was an afternoon that combined real-world perspective with genuine encouragement, and it was exactly the kind of experience that makes college life in Scunthorpe so much more than a classroom education.

A workshop rooted in real professional feedback

At the heart of Kevin's visit was a workshop designed to give drama students something they rarely get at this stage of their training: honest, informed, and constructive feedback from a working professional in the industry. Students were invited to perform monologues of their own choosing, giving each of them the freedom to present work they felt connected to and confident in.

What followed was a masterclass in the kind of real life professional feedback that can genuinely shift a student's understanding of their own craft. Kevin responded to each performance with the insight of someone who has navigated the industry from the inside, offering observations on technique, presence, and the practical realities of performing at a professional level. For students who are passionate about drama and serious about pursuing it beyond college, this kind of direct engagement with an industry actor is invaluable.

It is one thing to study performance in a classroom. It is another entirely to stand in front of someone who has lived that career and receive feedback that is both personal and professional. The students rose to the occasion, and the quality of discussion that followed each performance reflected just how engaged and motivated they were throughout the session.

Insight into career pathways in the performing arts

Beyond the practical workshop, Kevin also took time to speak with students about career pathways in the performing arts. This is an area that can feel uncertain for young people considering a future in drama, and hearing from an alumni who has built a genuine career in the industry offered a grounded and realistic perspective on what that journey can look like.

Students were able to ask questions, explore the realities of life as a working actor, and gain a clearer picture of the routes available to them after leaving college. Whether their ambitions lie in theatre, television, film, or community performance, understanding the landscape of the industry from someone actively working within it helps students make more informed decisions about their own next steps.

This is exactly the kind of career guidance that sets a college experience apart. It moves beyond generic advice and connects students with people who can speak with authority about what it actually takes to pursue a career in performance.

The value of alumni connections in Scunthorpe and beyond

One of the things that makes Kevin's visit particularly meaningful is that he is one of our own. He studied here, at John Leggott College, and he went on to pursue the career he trained for. For current students, that connection matters. It demonstrates that the pathways they are hoping to follow are genuinely achievable, and that the college experience they are building right now is a solid foundation for what comes next.

The relationship between a college and its alumni is one of the most powerful resources available to current students. When alumni return to share their experience, offer feedback, and invest time in the next generation, it strengthens the whole college community.

We are incredibly grateful to Kevin for making the time to visit and for bringing such energy, professionalism, and generosity to his session with our students. His willingness to return and give back to the college that helped shape his journey speaks volumes, and the students who took part in the workshop will carry that experience with them as they continue to develop their own.
