How John Leggott College Helps Students Secure Places at Oxford and Cambridge
Every year, students at John Leggott College continue to achieve exceptional academic success, with many securing places at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. These world-leading institutions accept only the highest achieving students, and we are proud that our applicants consistently perform above the national average. In both 2023 and 2024, John Leggott College students gained offers at twice the national rate, reflecting the strength of our academic preparation and the dedication of our students.
At the heart of this success is our Aspire Programme. This bespoke programme is designed specifically for students aiming for the top universities in the UK. Students receive tailored academic development, interview preparation, specialist support and guidance throughout the application process. Aspire helps students build the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to compete at the highest level, while also encouraging intellectual curiosity and independent thought. By the time they begin the Oxbridge admissions process, students are well prepared to showcase their abilities and potential.
John Leggott College offers an academic environment that values ambition and personal growth. Students are supported by experienced teaching staff who understand what top universities are looking for. The Aspire Programme also gives applicants the opportunity to explore subjects beyond the standard curriculum and take part in opportunities that widen their academic experience. This strong foundation helps them stand out during the competitive selection process.
We recently caught up with former Frederick Gough School students, who after studying with us at John Leggott College are current in their second-year at Oxford University:
Isabelle - I'm really enjoying life in Oxford so far. My Biology course is so interesting, and being taught by researchers who are leading their fields has been a great experience. Outside of studying, I'm also vice-captain of the Hertford Rowing team, which gives me a nice balance of study and sport. I've made so many friends from all over the UK which makes the intense workload a lot easier to manage.
JLC really helped me achieve my goal of getting here through being part of the aspire programme! With Oxford having the interviews system, having mock interviews to prepare really helped develop my critical thinking skills which is the main characteristic that tutors look for in applicants. The one-to-one support is really valuable and I encourage anyone looking to enhance their personal statements etc to be part of the programme!
Lauren - I'm Lauren and I'm studying Biochemistry at The Queen's College, Oxford University. My time at University has been an amazing experience which has been full of interesting opportunities and insightful learning. Oxford is a beautiful place to live and full passionate people who share the same interests as you which allows you to become a more curious person.
There are many societies that Oxford offers and there is something for everyone meaning you will find friends at societies or at your college. I go to the Queen's college which is a beautiful college, with a welcoming environment and a gorgeous library. Queen's does feel like a home and I have made friends for life. The Oxford workload is intense but incredibly rewarding. I get 1 tutorial a week and usually an essay or a problem sheet a week, along with lectures, labs and classes. Therefore, a lot of my time goes towards academics, however there is plenty of time for your interests.
I play volleyball and sub-edit for the Oxford Scientist magazine, as well as being a sponsorship officer for Oxford women in STEM. I encourage anyone to apply, most people at Oxford didn't think they would have got in, including myself. Definitely put yourself out there and challenge yourself because you never know...you might get in!
We are proud to play a part in helping students achieve such impressive goals and look forward to supporting the next generation of John Leggott College learners as they aim high and succeed.
If you are aspiring to attend Oxford, Cambridge, or another world-leading university, John Leggott College and the Aspire Programme provide the guidance, structure, and support you need to achieve your dreams.
