Social Spaces at John Leggott College: Where Students Spend Their Free Periods
A free period at John Leggott College can go a few different ways. Some students want silence to get through an essay. Some want a hot lunch, a coffee, or a game of something with friends upstairs. JLC has a space for each of those, and a new gym on the way.
Where can students study quietly at JLC?
The Hub is the place for quiet study. It's a calm space to work on your own or catch up with a friend without the noise of a canteen.
If total silence isn't your thing, The Arc sits in the middle. Downstairs there are seats to study and chat, so it works well for group work or revising together.
Where can students eat at JLC?
There are two canteens, plus a new coffee shop:
Society Street Kitchen serves warm meals, from pasta dishes to Greek gyros.
The Margaret Mason Centre is the busier canteen, where students go to eat and catch up with friends.
Six Eight Coffee Co is JLC's new café and shop, which opened at the start of this academic year.
All three are open to students at lunchtime and during free periods.
Where do students go to relax with friends?
Upstairs in The Arc, where students can grab a game to play between lessons. It's not as quiet as The Hub and not as busy as the canteens.
When the weather's warm, The Quad is JLC's outdoor space, with room to eat lunch or sit by the pond. Coming next is The Gym, which is due to open soon.
Spaces like these are where a lot of college life happens outside lessons, from Book Club to choir rehearsals, as this term's lunchtime enrichment round-up showed.
There's more on the wider site, from labs to the 3G pitch, on JLC's campus page.
Can I see the campus before I apply?
Yes. JLC's first open event of the year is on Thursday 8 October 2026, from 5pm to 8pm. You can walk round the social spaces, meet staff and students, and talk through the courses on offer for 2027.
Places can be booked on the open events page.
