How do our employer partnerships support the Gatsby Benchmarks?

The Gatsby Benchmarks are the national standard for good careers guidance. Our Strategic Employer Board and employer partnerships contribute directly to five of them: Benchmarks 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6.

01

A stable careers programme

Our Strategic Employer Board helps plan and shape our careers programme. Employers such as British Steel, North Lincolnshire Council and NHS Talent Academy work with us year after year, so the support you get is consistent and well planned.

02

Learning from career and labour market information

Our partners share what’s happening in local and national labour markets, including which skills are in demand across North Lincolnshire and the Humber. This helps you understand where the jobs are and what employers are looking for.

04

Linking curriculum learning to careers

Employer feedback helps shape our curriculum and Upskill Programme, so what you learn in lessons connects to real careers and builds the skills employers value most.

05

Encounters with employers and employees

Through our 12 strategic partners and a wider network of over 200 employer contacts, you’ll meet employers regularly at Upskill sessions, Careers Events, our Wider Destinations Event and guest lectures, workshops and industry talks.

06

Experiences of workplaces

Our partners offer external work placements and set real-world Employer Brief Projects, then review your work and give you feedback, so you gain genuine workplace experience before you leave college.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Employer partnership FAQs

Quick answers for students, parents and carers, and employers about how John Leggott College works with employers across North Lincolnshire and the Humber.

  • It’s a group of employers and partners from across the region who help shape our careers programme. Through regular engagement, they share insight into local and regional skills needs, inform curriculum development and help us create employer encounters, work-based learning and progression activities for every student.

  • Our Strategic Employer Board includes British Steel, North Lincolnshire Council, NHS Talent Academy, HETA, Wilkin Chapman Rollits, Ongo, Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Forrester Boyd, Scunthorpe United Football Club, Nolan Interiors, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and the Humber Outreach Programme. • For Medicine and Dentistry, most students take Chemistry and Biology plus at least one other science or Maths. For Veterinary Science, Biology and Chemistry are usually needed, with a third subject of your choice. Every university sets its own requirements, so our Aspire team helps you choose the right combination before you start Year 12.

  • Our employer partners offer external work placements, and our Work-Based Opportunities Officer can help you find one that matches your goals. You’ll also take on Employer Brief Projects, real-world challenges set and reviewed by local employers, so you gain workplace experience even if a traditional placement isn’t possible.

  • We ask them. Our Strategic Employer Board tells us directly about local and regional skills needs and where the gaps are. We use that insight to shape our curriculum and Upskill Programme, so you build the knowledge, behaviours and experience that employers, universities and apprenticeship providers value most.

Because our strategic partners return year after year, students get consistent insight from people who understand industry, helping them make well-informed decisions about university, an apprenticeship or employment.

  • There are lots of ways to get involved. Employers can deliver Upskill sessions, set Employer Brief Projects, offer work placements, give talks or workshops, join our careers events and share labour market insight. • It supports five of the eight benchmarks: Benchmark 1 through employer involvement in careers planning, Benchmark 2 by bringing in employer knowledge of local skills needs, Benchmark 4 by using employer feedback to develop students’ skills, Benchmark 5 through sustained engagement with employers, and Benchmark 6 through work placements and employer projects.
