Why A Levels Are a Strong Choice for Japanese Students

In Japan, students typically study a broad range of subjects throughout their secondary education. A Levels follow a different structure. At sixth form, students select three subjects and study each one in considerable depth over two years. This focused approach allows students to build genuine expertise in their chosen areas, develop strong analytical skills and produce the kind of specialist knowledge that leading universities in the UK and worldwide are looking for.

For Japanese students who have a clear idea of what they want to study at university or pursue as a career, this model is particularly well suited. Rather than continuing to cover many subjects at surface level, students invest their time and energy where it matters most to their future.

Alongside subject knowledge, A Level study develops the ability to think critically, construct opinions and communicate ideas with confidence. UK classrooms are interactive by nature, with teachers encouraging students to contribute, question and explore ideas independently. This style of learning can feel unfamiliar at first, but it is exactly the kind of academic experience that prepares students for university-level study and for professional life in a global environment. At JLC, Japanese students are supported carefully through that transition, with staff who understand the adjustment and know how to guide students through it at the right pace.

Start Your Journey to a Global University with A Levels or BTEC at JLC

Japanese high school diplomas are not accepted for direct entry to UK universities. To study at a UK university without completing a foundation course first, Japanese students need an internationally recognised qualification such as A Levels.

A Levels are accepted by universities across the UK and by institutions in Japan, Hong Kong, the United States, Canada and beyond. JLC students have gone on to study at the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge and Russell Group universities across the UK.

At JLC you choose three subjects and study them in depth over two years. Every subject is elective, so you build a programme that fits your strengths and your goals.

Students aiming for science or medicine often choose Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. Those interested in business or public life might combine Economics, Politics and Geography. Whatever direction you are heading in, JLC offers the subjects and the specialist teaching to get you there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Japanese students study A Levels in the UK?

Yes. Japanese students are very welcome to study A Levels at UK sixth form colleges. A Levels are a two-year qualification studied at ages 16 to 18 and are widely recognised by universities in the UK, Japan and around the world. To study in the UK you will need a UK Student Visa. John Leggott College is a licensed Student Sponsor and our international team will guide you through every step of the application and visa process.

What is the difference between A Levels and the Japanese high school curriculum?

In Japan, students study a wide range of subjects throughout their secondary education. A Levels work quite differently. Students choose three subjects and study each one in considerable depth over two years. This focused approach builds the specialist knowledge and analytical thinking that UK and international universities look for. For Japanese students who have a clear sense of where they want to go, A Levels offer a very effective pathway to university.

JLC provides thorough support for all international students. You will have a dedicated International Support Officer, a Progress Tutor who supports you both academically and personally throughout your time at college, an award-winning wellbeing team, specialist university admissions guidance, and access to the Aspire Programme for students targeting competitive universities. How do I apply to John Leggott College from Japan?

You can apply directly through the JLC international admissions process. You will need to submit your academic transcripts, evidence of your English language ability and a personal statement. If travelling to the UK for an interview is not possible, a video interview can be arranged. Once your application is successful, JLC will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, which you will need to apply for your UK Student Visa.

What universities have JLC international students gone on to?

JLC international students have a strong and consistent track record of university progression. In recent years, 80% of international students have gone on to Russell Group universities, with students securing places at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.
