From Romanian Education to UK A Levels
In Romania, students follow a national curriculum across a broad range of subjects, culminating in the Baccalaureate exam. The UK system works differently. Students specialise in three subjects from age 16, studying each one in considerable depth over two years. This focused approach builds the specialist knowledge and analytical thinking that leading UK universities look for.
For Romanian students aiming at top UK universities, A Levels are essential. The Romanian Diploma de Bacalaureat is not accepted as a standalone entry qualification by many of the most competitive institutions, including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL and Imperial College London. Completing A Levels at JLC puts Romanian students on equal footing with UK applicants, opens the door to the full range of Russell Group universities and removes the need for a separate foundation course.
At JLC every subject is elective, which means students build a programme around their strengths and goals. Those with a background in competitive Mathematics or Sciences are well placed to excel. Students aiming for medicine or engineering often choose Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. Those heading towards computer science or technology might combine Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Those with ambitions in business or economics might choose Mathematics, Economics and Geography.
UK classrooms also work differently from those in Romania. Teachers encourage debate, independent thinking and the construction of reasoned argument, building exactly the skills that leading universities and global employers look for.

John Leggott College offers clear and transparent international student fees, with packages that include tuition and accommodation for students studying in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Romanian students study A Levels in the UK?
Yes. Romanian students are welcome to study A Levels at UK sixth form colleges. A Levels are a two-year qualification for students aged 16 to 18 and are widely recognised by universities across the UK and internationally. As a non-EU citizen following Brexit, Romanian students will need a UK Student Visa to study in the UK. John Leggott College is a licensed Student Sponsor and our international team will guide you through the visa process from start to finish.
Is the Romanian Baccalaureate accepted by UK universities?
The Romanian Diploma de Bacalaureat is not accepted as a standalone entry qualification by many of the UK's most competitive universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group institutions. Completing A Levels at a UK sixth form college such as JLC is the most direct route to meeting UK university entry requirements and puts Romanian students on equal footing with UK applicants when applying to competitive degree programmes.
How does the Romanian school system compare to A Levels?
In Romania, students follow a broad national curriculum leading to the Baccalaureate exam. A Levels work quite differently. Students choose three subjects and study each one in considerable depth over two years. This specialist approach builds the analytical thinking and subject knowledge that UK universities look for. For Romanian students who already have strong foundations in Mathematics or Sciences, A Levels provide the ideal environment to develop that ability to the highest level.
How much does it cost to study A Levels at John Leggott College?
The tuition fee for international students on the two-year A Level programme at JLC is £11,000 per year, covering all educational services with no hidden costs. Scunthorpe is one of the most affordable places to live and study in the UK, with living costs considerably lower than London or other major cities. Homestay accommodation, student accommodation and boarding options are all available, and our international team can advise on the full cost of study before you apply.
What are the entry requirements for Romanian students applying to JLC?
Romanian students generally need the equivalent of five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics. Your Baccalaureate results will be assessed as part of your application, along with evidence of your English language ability. Some A Level subjects have specific requirements, particularly Mathematics and Sciences. If you need more time to prepare before beginning full A Level study, the JLC Pre A Level Programme offers a supported pathway into the main course. Our admissions team will assess your qualifications and advise you on the most suitable option.
