JLC Annual Sports Awards Night

Celebrating Sport at John Leggott College: The Annual Sports Awards

A week on and we are still smiling. Last week, John Leggott College held its annual Sports Awards, and what a night it was. From the performances that defined the season to the individuals who went above and beyond, it was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a sporting community and celebrate everything that has been achieved over the past year.

Congratulations to every student who received an award, and a heartfelt well done to every single person who represented JLC in sport this season. Competing takes courage, commitment and dedication, and every student who pulled on a JLC kit this year should be incredibly proud.

A Season to Remember

Sport at John Leggott College is about far more than winning. It is about the friendships built during training sessions, the resilience developed after a tough result, the growth that comes from pushing yourself further than you thought you could go, and the pride of representing your college on the pitch, on the court, on the track and beyond.

This season has delivered all of that and more. Across a wide range of sports and disciplines, JLC students have competed with distinction, shown outstanding character and created memories that will stay with them long after they leave college.

The Sports Awards night gave everyone the chance to pause, look back on those moments and recognise the people who made them happen.

Why Sport Matters at JLC

John Leggott College has built a deserved reputation as one of the leading providers of sport in the country.

Sport at JLC is not just an add-on to college life. It is woven into the fabric of the student experience. Students who take part in sport at JLC develop confidence, teamwork, leadership and discipline, qualities that serve them well in their studies and in whatever comes next after sixth form.

Whether a student is an elite athlete with professional ambitions or someone who simply loves competing and being part of a team, JLC creates the environment for every student to thrive.

Supporting Student Athletes

John Leggott College is a TASS-accredited provider, nationally recognised for supporting student athletes through the Dual Career Pathway. This means that students who combine sport and academic study at JLC do so with the right structures in place to help them succeed at both.

Students on the TASS pathway benefit from flexible timetabling around training and competitions, personalised guidance to balance sport and study, and access to coaching networks and wider support. It is a nationally recognised programme that reflects the seriousness with which JLC takes student athletic development alongside academic achievement.

Proud of Every Student

Sports awards nights are special because they remind everyone involved just how much has been achieved. Behind every trophy and every certificate is a story of hard work, early mornings, late finishes, setbacks overcome and moments of brilliance on the day.

At John Leggott College, we are proud of every student who represented the college in sport this season. The award winners absolutely deserve their recognition, but so does every student who turned up, gave their best and played their part in making this such a memorable year for JLC sport.

Study Sport at JLC

For students who want to take their passion for sport into the classroom as well as onto the pitch, JLC offers two excellent courses that provide a clear pathway into higher education and sport-related careers.

A Level Physical Education

The A Level Physical Education course at JLC is an academically rigorous qualification that combines the science, psychology and sociology of sport with practical performance. Students explore how the body responds to exercise, how psychology affects performance, and how social and cultural factors have shaped the world of sport. The course is assessed through exams and a practical component, and is particularly well suited to students who want to study sport science, sports coaching, physiotherapy or related subjects at university. Students must be actively participating in a sport and taking part in the JLC enrichment sport programme as part of the course. Entry requires five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, Maths and Science.

Sport and Physical Activity (CTEC Vocational)

The Sport and Physical Activity CTEC qualification takes a more practical, career-focused approach. It is designed for students who want to develop skills in coaching, fitness, sports leadership and physical activity delivery, and is assessed through a mixture of exams, practical assessments and written work. The course prepares students for progression into sport-related university degrees such as Sport Science, Sports Coaching and Development, Sport and Leisure Management or Physical Education, as well as direct entry into employment or apprenticeships in the sport and active leisure sector.

Both courses complement the broader sporting culture at JLC and give students the knowledge and qualifications to take their love of sport well beyond college.

Sport at JLC: Something for Everyone

One of the things that makes sport at John Leggott College so special is the breadth of what is on offer. Whether you are a seasoned competitor or trying a sport for the first time, there is a place for you in the JLC sporting community.

JLC currently offers the following sports programmes for students: Football, Basketball, Rugby, Netball, Volleyball, Badminton and Futsal.

The JLC Wolves Basketball Academy, established in 2017, is a particular highlight of the programme. Student athletes have basketball timetabled specifically around their studies, with access to strength and conditioning sessions and video analysis in addition to on-court training. No previous experience is required, and the programme welcomes students of all abilities.

Each year, additional programmes may run to meet the demand of students, and if there is a sport you would like to see offered that is not currently available, JLC encourages you to get in touch and have that conversation.
