Why Thai Students Need A Levels for UK University Entry
In Thailand, higher secondary education culminates in the Mathayom Suksa 6 certificate. However, this qualification is considered a lower level compared to UK A Levels, and Thai students who wish to study at a UK university will need to meet the entry requirements typically demanded by British institutions, which usually involves obtaining A Level qualifications to provide the necessary points for university entrance.
Completing A Levels at JLC is the most direct and well-regarded route into a UK university. It avoids the need for a foundation course, saves time and puts Thai students on equal footing with UK applicants when applying to competitive degree programmes.
How A Levels Differ from the Thai Curriculum
The UK system places a strong emphasis on specialisation. By age 16, students narrow their subjects to focus on just three or four, which is ideal for those who already know their academic path. Thai students used to broader subject coverage will need to adjust to this early decision-making.
This focused approach builds real depth of knowledge and the kind of analytical thinking that UK universities look for. Rather than covering many subjects at surface level, students invest their time in the areas that matter most to their future.
UK classrooms are also different in character. Teachers encourage students to question, discuss and form their own views. This style of learning can feel unfamiliar at first, but it is exactly what prepares students for university life and for working in a global environment. At JLC, Thai students are supported carefully through that transition by staff who understand the adjustment and know how to help students find their feet at the right pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to John Leggott College from Thailand?
You can apply directly through the JLC international admissions process online. You will need to submit your academic transcripts, evidence of your English language ability and a personal statement outlining your goals. If travelling to the UK for an interview is not possible, a video interview can be arranged. Once your application is successful, JLC will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, which you will need to apply for your UK Student Visa. Our international admissions team will guide you through every step of the process from your first enquiry through to arrival in the UK.
What qualifications do I need to study A Levels at JLC?
To study A Levels at JLC, Thai students generally need the equivalent of five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics. Your Mathayom results will be assessed as part of your application. Some A Level subjects have specific entry requirements, particularly Mathematics, Sciences and other specialist courses. If you are not yet ready to begin full A Level study, the JLC Pre A Level Programme offers a supported pathway to help you prepare before stepping into your main course.
What level of English do I need to study at JLC?
A good level of English is important for A Level study, but you do not need to be fluent before you arrive. JLC accepts IELTS as evidence of English language ability. For most A Level programmes, a score of around 5.5 overall is a typical starting point, though requirements can vary by subject. If your English needs further development, the Pre A Level Programme includes dedicated IELTS preparation and language support to help you reach the level required before beginning your full A Level course.
What is life like in the UK as a Thai student?
The UK is a welcoming and multicultural country and most international students settle in quickly and comfortably. Scunthorpe is a friendly, safe town with affordable living costs, good local transport and easy access to major cities including Sheffield, Leeds and Hull, all reachable by train for weekend trips and exploration. JLC also organises trips and visits throughout the year, giving students the chance to explore the UK and build friendships with students from around the world.
What support is available for Thai students at JLC?
JLC provides thorough support for every international student from the moment they arrive. You will have a dedicated International Support Officer, a Progress Tutor who supports you both academically and personally throughout your time at college, and access to an award-winning wellbeing team.
